Peru

Adventures, colours, cultures and flavours abound in Peru. The ancient civilisations of the Moche, Nazca, Chachapoya and Inca peoples live on today through the incredibly diverse modern cultural landscape of Peru.

The country is made up of three distinct regions – the coast with its dry desert climate, the Andes mountains and surrounding highlands, and the Amazon which makes up almost 60% of the country.

In Peru you can discover the architectural genius of Machu Picchu, see the mysterious Nazca Lines, visit the condors of Colca Canyon, stand on Lake Titicaca’s floating reed islands and photograph wildlife in the Amazon Jungle.

Peru is an astonishingly varied country. Peruvians like to say their country consist of three distinct geological areas, coast, highlands and jungle. Its rich history, archaeology, wildlife and enduring indigenous cultures all add up to make Peru one of South Americas most popular destinations. It lies just below the equator and is the third-largest country in south America, The Andes are the land of the condor, while the Amazonian forest contains a myriad of creatures making up its incredible eco-system, including pink dolphins, spider monkeys and tropical caiman. There is evidence of the ancient tribes and civilisations that lived here – the most famous among these is the Incas.

Frequently Asked Peru Questions

Because Peru has such a diverse geography the climate will vary per region. If it's warm on the coast it can be very cold in the mountains and you can find completely different weather in the jungle.

On the coast winter lasts from June to September. During this period, the mountainous areas are often sunny and warm during the day but cold at night.  The best time to visit the Peruvian coast is from November to April. The sun shines often and you will experience pleasant temperatures.

In the Amazon region of Peru and the lower area east of the Andes mountains, the daytime temperature is fairly constant all year round with 30 to 33C. Due to the high relative humidity, it can feel even hotter. In the 'dry months' the maximum temperatures can rise a little further, especially in July and August.  Although water levels in the Amazon will be high from December to March, meaning fauna may not venture as close to the river banks, this does offer the advantage of easier exploration of smaller tributaries which are sometimes inaccessible in the drier months.

In the Andes mountains the temperature is mainly determined by the altitude. For example, the average annual temperature in the valleys is often between 15C - 20C while on the upper peaks it can be below freezing. The best travel time for the Andes mountains is from May to October.

Visitors will notice more rain between November and April, with the wettest months being January and February.  It is important to note that the Inca Trail is closed for the month of February for maintenance due to the wet weather.
