Ecuador

Our best advice for Ecuador is simply to remember the country offers so much more than just the world famous Galapagos Islands.

The itineraries we list for inspiration offer a wide range of experiences that allow you to explore the Amazon, take a privately guided road trip through the Avenue of Volcanoes high in the Andes, and relax at the Papallacta hot springs.

You can explore colonial cities such as Quito and Cuenca, trek through National Parks, or visit colourful markets and cultural landmarks. While the country has so much to offer, we still strongly encourage travellers that visit Ecuador to fully explore the Galapagos.

Ecuador, the smallest Andean country in South America, offers a wealth of vibrant indigenous cultures, colonial architecture, volcanic landscapes and dense rainforests. The country contains some of the world’s most spectacular volcanic scenery, including the massive cone of Cotopaxi – the world’s highest active volcano. Discover the ruins of enigmatic Incan settlements, deserted Pacific beaches and the endless variety represented by the rainforest. Ecuador’s most famous attraction and crowning glory are the Galapagos Islands. Practically untouched by humans until recent times, they are as close as you can come anywhere on earth to pre-history.

Ecuador lies directly on the equator, so the entire country enjoys 12 hours of direct equatorial daylight 365 days a year. However, the climate you will experience depends largely on where you are in Ecuador, since there are four distinct geographical areas—the Sierra (mountains), the Oriente (eastern rainforests), the La Costa (Pacific coastal plains), and the Galapagos Islands.

The temperatures in Ecuador don’t change much throughout the year, so the seasons of spring, summer, winter, and fall pass unnoticed. The one seasonal change however is that of precipitation. The northernmost part and along the Amazon area will be the heaviest rainfall.

Ecuador experiences a wet and dry season each year, though the timeframe of each varies by region. Throughout the highlands October through May tends to be wetter than the months of June through September. January through April are often rainier and warmer on the coast while the months of April through November are when you’ll find the most rain near the Amazon.

Frequently Asked Ecuador Questions

As the country is on the equator, its temperature is similar year round so rain fall should be your main consideration. This completely depends on where in the country you will be travelling!

The Galapagos Islands will have vastly different weather to the Amazon so first pick where you want to explore and then look at local temperatures for your travel dates - or just ask for our expert advice!
